Mel Didier’s “Podnuh, Let Me Tell You a Story”

Posted on 03/02/2009 at 05:06 PM

Read about the man who has been an integral part of the organizations that found, signed and developed some of the top talent in the game: Andre Dawson, Larry Parish, Steve Rogers, Dave Henderson, Ralph Garr, and others.

Who else but Mel Didier, in search of talent, would sneak into and out of Cuba at the height of the Cold War?

A superb account of Didier’s rise to prominence in baseball, which began as a part-time scout. Didier was a key figure in the building of a World Series winner at Arizona, a signal achievement for an expansion team.

Wikipedia Definition of the Fungo Bat

Posted on 08/18/2008 at 04:14 AM

A fungo bat is specially designed bat used by baseball and softball coaches for practice purposes. The bat is designed to hit not thrown or pitched balls, but rather balls tossed up in the air. Typical fungo bats are 35–37 inches long and weigh 17–22 ounces. Coaches hit many balls during fielding practice, and the weight and length allow the coach to hit balls repeatedly with high accuracy. The small diameter also allows coaches to easily hit pop ups to catchers and infielders. Wikipedia definition of Fungo Bat

Fungo Definition

Posted on 06/03/2007 at 07:44 PM

The word fungo is defined by Haney’s Book of Reference as “a preliminary practice game in which one player takes the bat and, tossing the ball up, hits it as it falls, and if the ball is caught in the field on the fly, the player catching it takes the bat.  It is useless as practice in batting, but good for taking fly balls...”
