FungoBlog - Popup Priority

Posted on 04/27/2007 at 02:39 PM

Hitting popups are the single toughest assignment for a fungo hitter.  FungoMan’s FM-150 takes the “do-overs” out of the popup priority drill.

Run this drill in coach control mode by choosing the ball, pressing “move ball”, then pressing the fire button.
Run this drill in auto mode by setting the “time between balls” to 7 seconds.  This gives players a chance to get set at their position before the next ball comes.

By Mason Levinson

April 23 (Bloomberg)—New York City banned metal baseball bats in high school games when the City Council overrode Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto.
The vote was 41-4, seven more than required for an override, City Council spokesman Stephen Hamill said in a telephone interview. The law takes effect Sept. 1.

Take heart Evangel fans, baseball coach Tim Hulett is still coaching the Eagles.
A week ago, Hulett accepted a job to manage the short-season Class A Spokane Indians, a Texas Rangers affiliate. Since then, he and the school have been inundated with calls wondering if Hulett would remain the Evangel coach.

The short answer, yes.

FungoBlog - SBA Saves Time by Using the FM-150

We used to do our “Coach Look” all manually. A coach would throw 2 fly balls to the boys in the outfield, 2 ground balls at the shortstop position, and then that same boy would grab his bat and get a few soft toss pitches at home plate before running to second base.

In the spring season, we have 800-1000 kids.  It pretty much takes all day and a lot of wear and tear on the people that volunteer in that process.

With the FungoMan FM-150, we were able to process the same amount of kids in the same amount of time, with 2 1/2 times the number of balls.  It was beautiful!

Mustang/Pinto Summer Teams
Coach-Look Workout

• Two FungoMan FM-150 Machines per tryout field, i.e., 2 for Pinto, 2 for Mustang.
• Three tryout stations:  Outfield, Infield, & Batting.
• Begin @ 5:00 p.m. (with first 10 players volunteering to start earlier than the 6 p.m. advertised start time unless an official change is still possible).
• Time Allotment:  (3 mins/player)(60 players) = 180 mins = 3 hours
• To speed up the process, cones will indicate starting spots for fielding positions.
• The line will form in LF foul area, with Player #1 starting in the Outfield Station.
• As a player exits the SS position (Infield Station) to get ready to hit, the player before him bats.

OUTFIELD EVALUATION:
1. 2 On-target fly balls, throw in to 3B.
2. 2 Off-target, fly balls, one to each side, each one “catchable”, throw in to 3B.

INFIELD EVALUATION:
3. 2 On-target ground balls to SS, throw to 1B.
4. 2 Off-target, but “fieldable,” ground balls to SS, one to each side, throw to 1B.
5. 1 short infield ground ball to SS, must “charge”, throw to 1B.

BATTING EVALUATION:
6. 6 pitches from Fungoman, may swing at all.
7. Run on the last pitch, take “Go 3” sign from 3B-Coach approaching 2B, with a slide into 3B.

Hear why Tony Davis doesn’t want to go back to the “old way” of doing tryouts

What a treat is was to have Mr. FungoMan at the coach look tonight.

Not only did it ease the burden on the coaches and volunteers resulting in a smoother “look”, I believe that the kids got a kick out of it.  I was a bit wary of using it for the pitching, but it worked out wonderfully.

You have a great product and it was truly a pleasure working with you.  Thank you so much for your contribution to the SBA in this way.

Sincerely,
Russ Seacat III
Pinto Commissioner
