FungoBlog - Testimonial: Terry Dixon, Mary G. Montgomery High School

Posted on 06/17/2010 at 10:26 PM

FungoMan was purchased in April 2008.  We began using it during our summer season. The coaching staff wanted to get familiar with the day to day operation of the machine during this time so that we could use it to its full potential once we started our regular season in January.

Our Booster club at Mary G. Montgomery has always supported anything we feel makes us better and after having you demonstrate the machine we felt it would make us better. At first we saw all the potential it had as a defensive practice machine, but as we got deeper into our season and began to see better pitchers with more velocity we saw a tremendous improvement in our guys hitting the higher velocity fastballs that FungoMan throws time and time again with pin point accuracy. The ability to bump locations without the hitter realizing the location has changed is critical also.

Our players would have game at bats against some of the better pitchers in our area and they would be amazed at how prepared they were to have good at bats. Our guys gained tremendous confidence heading into the State play-offs and the result was making it to the State 6-A semi-finals.

I feel all programs at all levels from summer leagues to pro ball would benefit greatly from owning and using a FungoMan. The staff at FungoMan have always been very helpful in answering any questions we have and resolving any minor operator problems we may have confronted.

“The FungoMan is unbelievable.  It is the only piece of baseball equipment I have ever seen that can actually change a kid’s life.”

The HSAA Dallas Angels finished the 2010 season with a team record of 23-9-2. For the year, the Angels placed:

* 3rd in the Southwest Shootout (late February)
* qualified for the Championship game in the Prestonwood Christian Academy Tournament (championship game snowed out - 1st home school team to make it to the championship game)
* 2nd in the Home School World Series Tournament in Auburndale, FL(field of 23 teams from around the country)

The Dallas Angels began this year rebuilding a team that took 2nd in the World Series last year. With only 5 returning players, and just two returning starters, the Angels had their work cut out for them. On top of that, the Dallas area experienced record rainfalls last fall and this spring keeping the team from getting the outdoor work needed for such a young team. That showed in the Angels’ record during the first 3rd of the season, where they went 5-6-1. By mid-March, the team finally overcame these obstacles and really jelled as they went undefeated in the Prestonwood tournament to qualify for the championship game - a first for a home school team. The Angels never looked back, completing the second 2/3rds of the season with an 18-3-1 record. A couple of other notable accomplishments were:

* After years of 1-run losses to Dallas Christian, the Angels beat a tough Dallas Christian team this year for the 1st time since 2005.
* The Angels posted 5 shutout wins this year, including 1 in the World Series.

With a new format for the World Series (no qualifying Regional, just a 23 team, weeklong tournament in Florida), the Angels advanced with 5 wins and no losses to the championship game, including a huge win over the heavily favored Augusta Crusaders in the semifinals. The Augusta team had been the talk of the tournament, absolutely crushing every team they played (outscoring opponents 50 to 6) until they met the Angels who handed them a 7-3 loss. Finally, the Angels met up with the 7-time World Series Champion Atlanta Barons in the championship game - one of the most exciting baseball games you could hope for in a National championship game. In a nutshell, the Angels got down 5-1 at the end of 6 innings. Down to their last 3 outs in the top of the 7th, the Angels put together an incredible 5-run rally to take the lead. Atlanta tied it up in the bottom of the 7th, and both teams fought it out for 2 more innings. In the bottom of the 9th, the Barons scratched out a run for a 7-6 win.

For the season, the Angels outscored opponents 267 to 130 and out-hit opponents 0.309 to 0.254 (0.314 to 0.206 in the World Series). Our pitchers recorded 230 Ks, with 62 Ks by Michael Fusselman and 61 Ks by Ryan Woodall. Angels pitchers allowed only 92 walks for the season. The Angels had 280 hits, including 72 extra base hits. Team leaders included Michael Fusselman with 43 total hits and Jordan Goode with 14 extra base hits. The team had 205 RBIs with five players having 20 or more RBIs. Six players scored 20 or more runs.

Individual accomplishments included:

* Prestonwood All-Tournament Team (selected by Prestonwood coaching staff): Ryan Woodall, Michael Fusselman, and Jordan Goode
* Dallas Morning News Player of the Week - Honorable Mention: Ryan Woodall
* World Series All-American Team (as voted by teams and coaches): Ryan Woodall, Michael Fusselman, Jordan Goode, and Caleb Rogers

Individual honors at the end of the season included:

* MVP - Ryan Woodall
* Offensive Player of the Year - Michael Fusselman
* Defensive Player of the Year - Jordan Goode
* Pitcher of the Year - Ryan Woodall and Michael Fusselman (a pair of aces)
* Leadership - Brooks Wood
* Base Runner of the Year - Caleb Rogers
* Rookie of the Year - Hayden McIntyre
* Reliever of the Year - Roby Wade
* Most Improved Player - Kyle Preston

FungoBlog - New York City Bans Metal Baseball Bats…

Posted on 04/27/2007 at 07:27 AM

By Mason Levinson

April 23 (Bloomberg)—New York City banned metal baseball bats in high school games when the City Council overrode Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto.
The vote was 41-4, seven more than required for an override, City Council spokesman Stephen Hamill said in a telephone interview. The law takes effect Sept. 1.
